Things have changed since the November elections and right now movement in in favor of the Democrats. The ineptitude of the Republican President, both Houses of the US Congress, and both Houses of the NC General Assembly make things great for Democrats.
But, and it’s a big but, Democrats have to capitalize on it now. Dems have to work harder than ever at all three levels; local, State, and Federal. You can’t use all of the old ways to try to get things accomplished. The entire point is to get victories and to take credit for them, no matter how small the victories seem.
First, we have to change our message to a more populist message. We have to grab the “low hanging fruit” which is there ready for picking. There are ways to do this, and I will discuss a few in this article.
For decades, the middle class has been ignored. We have to be the champion for the middle class, or the working class if you prefer that designation. The main concern of most of us in this classification is the erosion of our economic security. So, what can we as citizens do about it? We don’t have the economic clout that the 2 percent have. we can’t “buy” our elected officials. We can make them very uncomfortable, however.
Advocate for a higher minimum wage. There will be lots of push back against this proposal. Don’t try to justify or explain it. Don’t try to show anyone any facts that refute the argument coming from the other side.
Argument for a higher minimum wage: Why are your lawmakers against you having more money when they don’t have a problem with CEOs making millions of dollars per year and getting raises
every year? Why don’t they have a problem with CEOs getting “golden parachutes” when they are fired for bankrupting a company? We could bankrupt a company for millions of dollars less than they get.
Make your elected officials explain to you why you don’t deserve a raise. As then which industry donates money to them. Then the follow up question, is why they won’t answer that question, which they won’t.
Demand Town Hall Meetings that are open to anyone who wants to attend, not just invited guests. As them the questions in this article. When they don’t have them, ask them why. Patrick McHenry’s standard answer is that he has them in August. Why? Who made that rule? He did, so he can change it any time he wants to.
Talk to your friends from the Republican Party and encourage them to run against any elected Republican in a primary. They all think they are in safe district. They think that Republicans always get elected, and they do for the most part. So, the thing they are most afraid of is losing. The easiest way to get them to lose is in a primary challenge. Work for that. It doesn’t matter who the challenger is, we want the incumbent out.
They might not want to run because of party loyalty, but you will be planing seeds. Someone might just think that they can get a fair number of Democrat votes, right or wrong.
Demand that you be allowed to buy prescription drugs through the mail from Canada. They will be much cheaper and
most are made in he USA anyway. They will be just as safe. If it’s OK to buy meat and toys with lead paint from China, what’s wrong with drugs from Canada?
These are just a few. I’ll have more in later posts. I would appreciate your comments even if you disagree. Weigh in on these few things.
