Shallow Christians and Bogus Patriots
Thomas Paine

Thomas Paine

I read lots of things, but the most disturbing often are on facebook. There are lots of people there who like to tout their Christianity or their Patriotism, and often both at the same time. In my view the Christians are mostly shallow and the patriots are almost always bogus.

Don’t misunderstand me. I am a Christian and a patriot, but what I usually see is neither. It is simply being distracted by the latest shiny object. There is no thinking involved at all.

Let’s start with the Christians.

The definition of a Christian is a follower of Christ. Pretty simple, but many of those professed Christians will go out of their way to not be Christ-like.

Many will go to a mega church where the pastor will spend his entire sermon telling the congregants what Jesus will do for them. He’ll heal them, make them rich, forgive them of any sin that they commit, protect them, and died for them.

But it’s a two way street, so the pastor will tell the congregants what they will have to do. They will have to give some money to the mega church so that the mega church can send bibles to some 3rd world

country. Or they can give some money to the church, so that the mega church can send some people to Haiti to build a church. Then they will have to go out and find some more members, so more people can give money to the mega church. Then they will be disciples of Christ, and will feel good about themselves.

Jesus said to feed the hungry, help the poor (he preached primarily to the poor and marginalized), take care of the sick, turn the other cheek, and love your enemies. In other words, if you want to be a disciple of Christ, you have to try to be just like Him.

You can’t hate Muslims, liberals, illegal immigrants, drug dealers, murderers, Trump, or NFL player who kneel during the National Anthem. You can’t hate anyone.

I can hear it now. “Thomas Paine, I hate the sin, but love the sinner.” Nope, you do not. Your idea of helping the needy or those who are grieving, or the disadvantaged is to offer your thoughts and prayers, send $10 to a hurricane relief fund, and argue that gun guns don’t kill people. How many of your thoughts and prayers have turned on the electricity in Puerto Rico?

Yet, you don’t want to allow the government to take $10 out of your paycheck so that everyone can have medical care.

There is only one sin.

There is only one sin and that is not to love. Jesus’ ministry was about 65-70% about loving, loving your God, loving your neighbor, loving your enemies. If you love, you will do everything in your power to help those less fortunate, you won’t steal, kill or covet, you will respect and honor your parents, you won’t do any of the other things in the 10 Commandments.

Start loving. Stop talking about loving. So, if you claim you love the sinner, but hate the sin, put your money and your actions where your mouth is.

This is simply being distracted by the latest shiny object. Now it is kneeling during the National Anthem. You say the NFL players are

disrespecting the flag, the military, the anthem. At the same time you get your panties in a wad over the Confederate Flag, the flag of traitors who fought a war against the US government. You are mad because some places are taking down statues of traitors who fought for the right to keep slaves, subjugating an entire race of people. But you have major outrage if someone flew a Nazi flag or wanted to erect a statue of Hitler. He did some of the same things.

You show your extreme commitment to the country by tying a

yellow ribbon around a tree instead of enlisting in military service. You do that because it’s easy, and it’s over in 5 minutes.

You post photos of folks kneeling in prayer, but have no problem when your Congressman refuses to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

It’s OK for the government to allow you to discriminate by not selling a cake to a gay couple because they are upholding your religious beliefs. But it is not ok for the government to allow  Muslims to build a mosque, even if it is someone else’s religious belief.

You tell everyone on facebook and Twitter how much you love Jesus by posting a meme that says “I love Jesus.” You call the poor lazy and criminals with only anecdotal “evidence.” Tell me where in the Bible that Jesus said, “Help the poor, except……” You don’t work in soup kitchen, or visit prisons, or take in strangers (immigrants). And by God, you don’t want your government to do it either.

Apparently Jesus loved guns. You act like that because when 500+

are killed or injured by gun violence, we can’t even try to do anything about that. Instead, you send them a thought, or a prayer. You are telepathic, I guess.

No one can protest anything that you believe in, because someone told you to believe it. You are right all the time, and all the time, they are wrong. Since you are saved, you can do no wrong. But, you haven’t been sanctified and you are not Christ-like. Look it up. Read the red ;letters in the Bible. Those are the words that Jesus said.

Be like Him.
